The Effects of US Sanctions in Venezuela

Since 2014, the United States has been imposing sanctions on the Venezuelan government in an attempt to accomplish foreign policy goals that would be beneficial to its geopolitical interests in the region and help the Venezuelan people in the process. This research offers a comprehensive empirical analysis of these sanctions. It aims to identify the effects of US sanctions in Venezuela, as intended by the foreign policy goals of the United States, and to measure the effectiveness of sanctions in accomplishing these goals. Additionally, this research seeks to explain the geopolitical strategy of US sanctions as seen through the lens of geoeconomic theory. It will detail the US intensions of generating regime change, restoring democracy, and improving human rights in Venezuela. More specifically, it will reveal the role of sanctions in acting as a geopolitical tool to fulfill these intentions. Ultimately, the research will show how sanctions and companion policies are intended to improve the US-Venezuela relationship that has declined since the time of Hugo Chavez.

The aim of this thesis is to analyze the impact of government of Hugo Chávez on economic development of Venezuela. This thesis is divided into three parts: The theoretical part, the analytical part and the proposal. In the theoretical part are defined basic economic concepts, such as national economy, economic development and growth, selected economic and social indicators that determine economic development of the state, the international trade and forms of government. The analytic section is mostly focused on the analysis of five selected indicators in three time periods, which clarify the impact of government of Hugo Chávez on economic development of Venezuela. Final findings of the analysis of five selected indicators are summarized in the SWOT analysis to evaluate the government of Hugo Chávez, together with two possible future scenarios of development. In the proposal are described possible solutions or suggestions for heading of the policy of President Hugo Chávez to ensure the economic development of Venezuela.

The topic of the thesis is changes that occurred in Venezuela in last 20 years of its development. The aim of the disertation is to evaluate the shift of the development of Venezuela after the fall of Hugo Cháves and the rise of Nicolás Maduro to power. The theoretical part of the thesis is aimed on Hugo Cháves' rise to power and characteristics of governing body of his successor Nicolás Maduro. The analytical part is divided into two sections - political changes and social-economical changes. Topics like internal and external politics of the country, changes in social and security policies, foreign trade and political issues, changes i the social system and dependance of the country on oil trade are furthermore described in the analytical part. The last section deals with the development of the country based on selected macro-economical markers.

This bachelor thesis deals with the influence of the military on the current political situation in Venezuela. The introduction part is focused on explaining the concept of military. It also explains how this institution has an impact on the development of civil-military relations in Latin America, from the struggle for independence to the present. The next part is devoted to a brief outline of the history of Venezuela, especially in the political context from the period of the rise of the Punto Fijo democracy to the reign of left-wing populist president Hugo Chávez and current president Nicolas Maduro. The main part of thesis is focused on the Venezuelan army and its influence on maintaining the current regime in the country. The subchapters explain the structure of the armed forces, militarization of state institutions, military spending and further topics related to Venezuelan army.
Foreign and Internal Changes in Venezuela under "chavismo" Governments

This bachelor thesis focuses on the analysis of economic, foreign and internal changes in Venezuela. The main aims of the thesis are to assess to what extent Hugo Chávez turned away from the previous era of the democracy of Punto Fijo and to explain which changes brought the new president Nicolas Maduro. The first chapter is theoretical and defines the division of political systems with a focus on the characteristics of Latin-American presidential systems. The second chapter focuses on the differences between the era of democracy of Punto Fijo and chavismo. The third chapter presents Venezuelan oil cycles which have an immense impact on an economic situation of the country, but also on the foreign policy. Further, the thesis analyses the government´s relations with the opposition and the armed forces. The conclusion of the analysis is that Hugo Chávez changed mainly the political environment, in economy he continued with an ISI policy and deepened the dependence on oil. His successor Nicolas Maduro faces to many problems. Venezuela is in a severe economic and political crisis for several years. The new president has to maintain the loyalty of the army at the cost of the growth of its political power. The invigorated opposition stands against Maduro and holds the majority in the National Assembly.
Analysis of the impact of Chavismo policies on economic and social development in Venezuela from 1999 to 2016

The aim of this thesis is to analyze the role of the chavista economic and social policies within economic and social development of Venezuela between 1999 and 2016. This thesis offers a comprehensive view of the economic performance during the tested period with major external and internal factors in mind. It uses the methods of analysis, description and comparison. The initial objective is to describe and analyze the circumstances which inevitably led to the election of Hugo Chavez and the Chavismo being accepted by the majority of people. Following with analysis of particular monetary and fiscal policies with special focus on the Exchange rate policy, redistribution policy and expropriations of parts of the private sector. The analysis has proved the economic policies of Chavismo to be ineffective, eventually leading to hyperinflation and causing Venezuela to undergo the worst economic and social crisis in its history.

This thesis deals with the political-economic situation in Venezuela and the role of oil in it. The aim is to asses the extent of dependency of Venezuela on the oil and also what efect the nationalization had on its oil industry and political-economic situation in the country. In the theoretical part of the thesis the draft of the resource curse is introduced, also the main actors of the international oil business and basic factors of economic prosperity are defined and then the political-economic development of Venezuela is outlined. The practical part of the thesis is focused on the analysis of aquired data which is compared to the development in the international oil business.
